NL De Standaard 06/04/2004: Clear2Pay Groeit snel (dutch version only)

E-Trends Awards: Clear2Pay
The market for online payments is still wide open. 86% of all B2B transactions are still executed off-line. Independent systems for online payments do exist (ex. PayPal), but most of them are a threat to banks as they make their profit from keeping the money on proprietary accounts and capitalizing on the interest. Jürgen Ingels, at that time Senior Investment Manager at Dexia Ventures, decided there was still room for a pure online payment enabler: a company that delivers the infrastructure to the bank, but does not go into competition with it.

A Taxonomy of Electronic Payments
The Internet is just beginning to realize one of its true callings: the facilitation of fast, friendly, low-cost business-to-business payments. Yet dystopian fragmentation among today's B2B exchanges, disintermediators, tech-led pilots, corporate spin-offs and bank joint ventures could lead to distraction from the genuine payments needs of businesses, corporates and governments. This article identifies industry- and region-specific gaps in existing payments solutions, and sketches a taxonomy of emerging players in the B2B epayments space as a workable means of catalysing a less-paper future.

European Cross-Border Payments: Is Utopia So Difficult?
A lot has been written on the subject of European cross-border payments in recent months. Most of this relates to the European fee parity regulation, competing Visa and Mastercard authentication standards, the EBA's ongoing Step 2 initiative and the take-up (or lack of it) of the ECBS' IBAN standard. These issues are interesting. However, it is easy to rush headlong into the small print before grasping the key issue. Payments that were once considered exotic will be seen as a commodity product by consumers. Is it too utopian to imagine two basic cross-border payment scenarios?

NL Banking & Finance 07/2004:
Een nieuwe generatie betaalsystemen dringt zich op
(dutch version only)
De man erachter heet Michel Akkermans. Voor wie hem nog niet (goed genoeg) kent, een kleine introductie. Plus een flinke portie visie.

Michel Akkermans: The man who brought us e-finance
Belgians are famous for exporting delightful, frivolous products like beer and chocolate. However, leading Belgian entrepreneur Michel Akkermans is responsible for introducing a far more profound product to the world: e-finance.

Michel Akkermans Sees Specific E-finance Know-How In Belgium
When he sold his technology company FICS at the end of 1999 to the American group S1, it appeared that Michel Akkermans' future lay in the US. Two years later, he chose Europe once again and has resurfaced both in established organizations such as Gimv and the start-up company Clear2Pay. "There is a common thread about what I do'', says Michel Akkermans.

Payment Over the Internet Can Be Handled More Elegantly
European Commissioner Bolkestein may well criticize the high costs of international payments, but the fact is that the single currency will see banks saying farewell to a lucrative part of their business. In the Netherlands and Belgium we have become accustomed for some time to extremely efficient systems. Banks have until now charged little for payments services. They only make significant margins on cross-border payment transactions.
